I'm still on the wooden shafts but don't use them anything like as much as i used to.

I put double rings on them, slows the mushrooming down a bit.

Never had 1 break in the first tree infact usually get a fair while out of them, as long as u hit them squareish on and is better if the sledge head is bigger than the wedge (same idea as a fencing mel/mual) always meant to weld an oversized face on my sledge but never got round to it

Fire and big screw both good ideas always just drilled them out in past, never that bad to do.

at about 27 quid a shot, and if your unlucky a wooden shaft only lasts 3 trees...... it's gets pricey lol

But a replacement shaft is only £3 or am I missing something. Double ring and give it a bit of a soak in water to hold the rings in place the first use and they're great. 4 of us worked our way through 8 hectares of hand cut clear fell and the only trashed wedges were single ringed, yet still survived the whole job. Extra rings are about £3 too. Oh, plastic wedges didn't last too long.

Good God man, what are you hitting them with?

he did say throw the whole lot on the bin, I though he means the alloy bit too which would be pricey to replace.

No, I meant the whole lot. Every annoying bit!

Don't have time to poke bits of annoying wood out.

Takes less time to buy new wedges.

How did you get the rings on the nylon shaft : whittling or brute force ( there's no way my shaft would fit that hole, fnaar fnaar! )

Its all very well which will last the longest, but is it not 2-3 times the price.

Will it last 2 or 3 times longer? Which it needs too.

Must admit most of the ones i've broke have been trying to knock 1 out to reposition it whle still a bit of pressure on it, so hitting it sideways and snapping at the alloy point
