I'm booked up until October with fencing work- I can deal with the heat fine but the ground is like concrete for banging in posts which is slowing me down a bit..

I think parish mags are a good source of advertising- I always seem to get nice customers from them too!

The hard bit about starting up is inevitably work is going to slow down until you have enough customers to rely on repeat buisness- once you have established them you will never have to advertise again!

Phew I,m sweating just thinking about that hard ground . This heat does slow you down it can be a nightmare if your not careful . Parish mags are kicking my old yellow pages advert off the bloody map

Our work load has doubled due to the hot weather but only getting half as much done as we would like as the heat is draining us. On average we are drinking between 2-5 litres of water/squash dependant on what the job is. Its a blessing in some places when a colleague fires up the leaf blower to cool us down.

Parish mag here, one full page ad is paying for itself each month, getting a fair amount of recommendations and repeat custom this year.

On the other end of the business it is manic, I'm struggling to get tree work done!

The recommendations and repeat customers are in general a lot nicer to deal with, having the reputation already there before you turn up helps a lot at quote stage, and people listen to what is said. The ones off the parish mag are a mixed bag, usually ok with the odd one fishing for quotes. Pricing must be about right as I'm getting ones who know whats involved and people after a quick job think I'm expensive, never heard 'oohh thats cheap' yet.

Mitchel considering that you have been 'properly self employed' for one year surely you are one of these pop up businesses that are undercutting everybody??

Not at all I have equipment to pay for I'm on par with most on price. This isn't a half ass set up operation I'm doing this for the long run

Loads on the go at the mo.The only thing suffering is grass cutting. It's just not growing. We are starting early and finishing early in this heat.Everyone's wilting by lunchtime,so we're knocking off at three before anyone hurts themselves with exhaustion.Plenty of drinks on site and breaks a bit more regular.

Local paper has been good.just renewed our add today.Networking is the key I find.If I run into local tradesmen on jobs we exchange a few cards to pass on.Also, although it can be a pain when you're busy,I never ignore people who walk by and want to chat.Picked up a fair bit of work this way. It's often neighbours who want to check you out.Be polite and knowledgeable and before you know it They have your card or are arranging for you to come and look at something.Be proactive.I put myself about with a can do attitude, and work with various people.Gardeners, landscapers, and builders are good people to know even if you do a bit yourself.I look on them as potential workmates rather than the competition.
