Hello,

Since the beginning of all this hot weather we are having my works become erratic is this normal? I was expecting my work to increase instead it's up and down seeing more and more competition on the road .

Any advice?

It's the busiest I've seen this period for years!

This is my first year doing the job properly self employed and relying on it as a wage I was earning more last year part time than this year up to now. I'm finding with this heat and weather more and more pop up business's diluting my local area and under cutting me for silly money.

Just need some advice really what to do as I'm considering packing up running my own company and working somewhere sub contracting like down south.

The competition will pop up when ever and wherever; I noticed a huge leap in numbers just after the recession of 2008 but they've all gone by the way side.

Calls will dip this time of year due to holidays and people not wanting hairy a***d tree surgeons messing up their garden so the more of you out there the more it'll seem that works thin.

When I started 18 years ago we probably worked 3-4 days a week from July to August then silly season kicked in in September.

My best advice would be to hang in there, consolidate where you can and continue pushing your name wherever you can.

Well I'm 23 just set up on my own last year so just seeking advice really as it's quite a worrying time is it worth advertising? The only place I get my work from is referrals and Facebook I've never done a leaflet drop.

Welcome to self employment, you can never switch off. You need to keep your foot on the gas all the time, if your not working, you should be looking and promoting in any way shape or form.

I started when I just turned 23, I'm nearly 39 and I never know exactly what I'm doing tomorrow, too many variables.

I've been on holiday for 2 weeks and it's too warm for me to work efficiently and safely today. If it cools down I'll go out after my dinner and may not be back until 10pm at the earliest.

This morning I had breakfast with my financial advisor and looked at 3 jobs, so not a wasted day.

Not sure where my posting has gone but from an advertising stand point truck sign writing is always a good place to start, once done it's free advertising. Get a good web page made up (if that's the right phrase); if you're techno minded do it yourself and save a few quid.

Look into Parish magazines, mail drops, there's loads of options; spend the down time as a positive and blitz your local area with flyers.

A good tip told to me a few years ago was, with your smart sign written truck drive to a NT site (or such like) and leave it there for a few hours; gives the impression you're working at the place. I've never tried this so cannot comment on whether it works, but at this stage of your business it will be hard work, you will be undercut, you will lose jobs; as Stephen says 'Welcome to self employment'.
