Good Fly Sprays/Remedies

As per Cob's post on the Photo thread, what do you use for Fly Spray? It's an essential for horse-loggers, can't expect horses to stand still and concentrate while they are being eaten alive by midges and horse-flys!

 

I currently use DEET based sprays which are effective, but expensive and I don't like using strong chemicals if I can avoid it. Citronella based sprays are ineffective in my experience. I've heard rumours of people using watered-down baby oils, garlic, and all sorts.

As a repellent I use skin so soft or something like that from avon. Works against mozzies my mate takes it to Afghanistan so it seems to work. For work fogging chicken houses for flies and red mite I use a product called insect eco. I quite rate it. You can put it straight on horses as some of customers do for horse flies. Its natural when I treat animal housesyou can leave the animals in which is handy.

i have seen good results with cattle poor on used on donkeys but not tried it my self

My farrier gave me a recipe which I now use all the time- any shop bought stuff costs a fortune in the quantities we use!

In an old 2litre coke bottle you mix-

a very strong cup of cold tea, using about 4 tea bags

1tbls meths (sounds wrong but its ok)

1tbls citronella oil ( can buy it by the 1/2 litre on ebay)

1 crushed garlic clove

1tsp washing up liquid

1 tbls vinegar

top it all up with water. I bought a small pump weed killer sprayer to apply it. Works on humans too!

"Smidge that Midge" is apparently safe for use on children and pregnant women (not sure any relevance) but expensive, relatively speaking.

 

A good review here tho Smidge That Midge.. Does it actually work?

 

The poor horses could do with multiple, strategically placed, tails.

Yep, Smidge is just about the best I`ve tried, for the highland midge anyway, put it on the dog to, don`t know about the horse.

a few years back there used to be a herb supplement called beelzebub a chap with working shires up the road used to feed it and he swore it helped them with flies

 

we use pig oil and sulphur on his legs and we also mix garlic powder with pig oil and sulphur and lightly rub over his coat and mane and tail

never tried it on my horse but skin so soft def works good for midges on people. that receipe with the coke bottle and tea sounds good. i'd like to give that a go.....
