Insurance is the killer. My 17 y/o stepdaughter just looking now. £1700 fully comp for a 2002 Ford KA worth just over £2000, and that was one of the cheaper ones. Ended up on her mums insurance but to name her so she can earn no claims was still expensive. And if she has an accident the mum looses her no claims. They wouldn't allow us to protect it.

I have to say that I'm old enough to admit that my first car was a Mark 2 Cortina 1600E, followed by a '63 Beetle then a '73(?) RS2000! Even now I reckon that old is best, no fancy electronics, cheap spares and relatively cheap insurance. I dread to think of the insurance costs on cheap tin nowadays! Good Luck with the search.

my first vehicle was an r-reg mwb semi-high roof transit which i got for 1k but was written off in a collision that the police said was a 50/50 due to me having to cross the give way line to see oncoming traffic. this was followed by my current van a citroen dispatch and i have my infamous landy 90 (see capel manor thread).

You'd pick up an old Golf or Polo for that sort of money - both should be pretty safe bets in terms of reliability, they go on forever.

Or, I had an old L reg Cavalier a few years ago when I was a student that I bought for £300.

The only thing that went wrong in over 30,000 miles (it had something like 120,000 on it when I bought it and I sold it with 150,000 and still running perfectly) was it needed a new plastic casing for the indicator bulb where it got clipped in a car park.

The only snag 'might' be the insurance, but it's well worth a look.
