Hello everyone

I have a Ryobi PCN-3335 Petrol 33cc Chainsaw.

To cut a long story short I needed to strip down my chainsaw. All that remains is the main chassis plus piston, crankshaft and clutch. The cylinder head has been removed.

My problem which I done in my ignorance is take off the cylinder head without thinking about the piston ring on the piston. :o

PLease click on the following urls to see photographs of my chainsaw

(My webhost does allow linking. BUt if you click on the URL and inside the new window or tab go the the address bar and hit the enter or return button, the picture will appear.)

Picture 2.jpg shows you the flywheel at the bottom of the photo plus piston oil sump and crankshaft

Picture 6.jpg shows you the brake cable plus the clutch

My problem is I am struggling to insert the piston into the cylinder head. CAn anyone help me?

I have mentioned picture 6 as I may need to take off the clutch, but I dont know how without risking damage to the chainsaw. Any help given to me I would be grateful for.

thanks :) :) :) :)

Why not upload the photos on here and make it a bit easier for people to help you.

BTW I usually find you can get the piston inserted by fiddling a little, make sure the piston is on the right way round (arrow pointing forward)

Generally you line up the rings with the pins in the piston, oil up the bore and push the cylinder over the piston, easing the piston in to the cylinder - sometimes pushing the ring ends in to the piston may help.

Dont forget to seal the lower crankcase to the upper with suitable crankcase sealent.

By the way - your links don't work:thumbdown:

OK. JUst I am struggling to take the clutch off and removing the crankshaft+piston away from the chassis/body. What shall I do? I dont if I need more sophisticated tools to do the job.

Working on Ryobis is for me a true nightmare. I have taken the view in the past that they are so cheap and parts are so dear and everything about tehm is difficult to work on that you somethimes have to cut your losses and chuck out the badly broken ones.

The link doesn't work. I have a 4046C that I would like to nurse back to helth but I think has a scored cylinder or workn ring, so I'd love to see what they look like inside.

Shouldn't need to take the clutch off to put the piston back on the cylinder. Look like you have more than enough clearance to get the piston in the bottom of the barrel. Just put the piston to its highest point, line up the piston ring gap up with the little pin that's in the ring recess, oil the base of the bore with a smear of oil on your finger, squeeze ring together with one hand and slide the barrel on with the other, DONT FORCE it.

If you struggle put a cable tie around the ring to compress it first and slide the piston into the cylinder that way using 2 hands.

P.s the clutch is a backwards thread....

Cut a wide strip of aluminium from a coke can and wrap it round the piston with the ring lined up on the locating pin. As the piston enters the cylinder slide the aluminium strip down and off the piston. Have you had the piston off the conrod ? Make sure the arrow on the piston is pointing at the exhaust port.
