I've never understood why they use those polychain belts, I'd have thought vee belts would take the shock loading better?

 

They run 5 massive V belts down one side in the high level casing, the power then transfers down to the wheel on the other side via the polychain , I suppose if they used v belts they would would need to be a larger diameter which would then reduce the scope of the wheel in reduced depth . That polychain belt is just shy of £300 so its just as well it lasts for ages:thumbup1:

That makes sense

 

That polychain belt is just shy of £300 so its just as well it lasts for ages:thumbup1:

 

 

Or 4 stumps if the pulley-sprockets are worn :thumbdown:. BTW I was quoted £800 for the big Carlton polychain.

That's an awesome looking grinder. 25 years ago I remember using a Levco HD50 with a big drum on the front and about 5 rows of teeth. The drum was very heavy and was basically raised up by hydraulic arms and then dropped free fall onto the stump. It was by impressive, not sure if there are any about now?

Was that the one that turned over when driven at speed around a roundabout near Dorking?

how many hp is that

 

Dont know I think HP is meaningless figure without the torque figures, its torque you need to compare and that info is always missing from fact sheets. Its these old school long strokes that really do slog hard, engine is four feet tall.

Bearings have lost their newness and were not coming off without a fight so I attacked them with the hot spanner.

is the shaft on the cutter wheel worn? is there a clutch on that or is it direct drive the bell housing looks too small to have a clutch i quite like the old deutz air cooled engines very simple and for a stump grinder less bits to fall off as long as you can keep them cool they run forever just watch for exhaust leaks as the barrels can get hot spots when the manifold gaskets blow we had some old turbo v10s and straight 6s in some of our kit and they would cook the drivers they were that hot:thumbup:
