Most popular length.

Recommended Posts

Hello,

was having a chat with someone the other day about thinning out some broad leaves for firewood. Nothing too exciting, a bit of ash, syc & oak. Relatively straight lengths that could go through a processor but we were debating the best size lengths. The kit for extraction plays a big part of it but generally speaking what do people go for? 2 metres is probably a bit short but you could ensure it was good straight lengths, 3 metres and straight might be far more difficult. 2.3? 2.5? or just a mixed bag of lengths as long as its straight.

What would you go for?

2-2.3 = two bays on most forwarders or 2.5's bigger forwarder although on small forwarders back bay of 2.3's can be hard to load - keep from falling off the back.

3.1's plus make less work for forwarding but as you say higher proportion

of bends.

Maybe a mix of both.

I much prefer cutting chip to 2.2 or 3.7 but the latter are harder to lift onto a Japa 700 (no fandangled log-deck here!)

Then hauliers want to optimise load cubic capacity in relation to weight...

Put curly bits in the stack and the haulier is likely to push a sharp stick in your eyeball. :) Cant think of anything worse:thumbdown:
