I try to wear plastic safety glasses, you soon get used to them, and they all but eradicate that poke in the eye, stops a lot of dust too, mine dont seem to steam up,but if they do, use 'bob heath' visor treatment or similar(motorcycle shops).

The stuff they give you at the hospital is brilliant :thumbup1: weren't too impressed when I asked if I could have some though!

It will heal sound but yeah will take a few days.

Hi guys,

I actually work in a hospital eye department and thought I might as well contribute to this thread as its actually something i understand!

Most corneal abrasions are harmless, and will clear up in a few days with topical antibiotic eye drops, with or without a corneal bandage.

HOWEVER, a number of incidences do not follow this pattern.

Some abrasions lead to infection which in turn can lead to corneal ulcers (pic 1). Some can lead to severe corneal cloudiness and scarring (pic 2) by which point... i'm sorry guys... a corneal transplant is your only option!

Some never heal properly, meaning that every morning when you open your eyes, your eyelids peel off the top layer of newly formed cells and the process starts all over again.

Other problems include debris penetrating the cornea, which then has to be removed with a needle (not for those who dont like looking at needles!), and anybody who has anything that penetrates the lens inside the eye is most certainly going to get a traumatic cataract (pic 3).

The long and short of it is, wear eye protection because next time it might not be someone else, it might be you, and you might be unfortunate enough to get a complicated case.

Louisa

Having had a corneal abrasion so bad that instead of a couple of drops of painkiller in the eye, A+E nurse emptied two ampoules in and then got all the other nurses in to have a butchers too, I can totally sympathise. That was milling spalted beech with Stihl integra helmet- visor and mesh, and a headwind on a beech butt up to my shoulder. Carried on and had to leave my truck half way home as i basically went blind for an hour!!!

Thanks again for you posts!! Especially Louisa! good to have some inside knowledge!! :thumbup1:

Fingers crossed all is okay when they unwrap it later, and then it will just heal quickly!

I hate that peeling off the top layer every morning when you open your eyes!! :scared1:

I also hope this will be my last scratch for a bit!! definately going to get some more specs and demister!

I can still feel mine now if i rub my eye too hard, gotta be one of the most irritating injuries going................
