Getting them to hunt for their food sounds like a winner to me, not much greater motivation than hunger. I guess you've already looked at rope swings, always an entertainer although just don't go too big I guess.

Other than that I'd just let them do their thing, the opportunity to use their imaginations in a forest is lost on so many kids these days, and there're few better ways of nurturing it than giving them the freedom to do whatever they can dream up. I reckon...

Drum hunt,

1 person is the drummer who walks slowly randomly around hitting a drum.

Rest of group is pared up as surcher and guardian

The surcher is blindfolded but has to track down the drummer which is a bit harder as the sound is bounced around by the trees. The guardian looks after them by describing what's next to them and helps stop them walking into things but can't tell them which way to go to find the drummer.

Makes for a good trust exercise

You could get some flat pack bird boxes and have them build them and choose where to put them up

Get them to light the fire using a bow-drill feather sticks etc. Its one of those things kids always hear about but never manage to do so would make their day. You could do boiling water in a paper bag, cooking bread dough wrapped on a stick.

Involve them in everything from carrying in the food and kit, gathering wood, cooking, tidy up and a huge game of manhunt, because that's what it always ends up as!
