I don't think it has to be over 3.5t to be mot exempt, but I could be wrong.

I think it depends what's on the vehicle reg document as mobile plant or special types are mot exempt and can run on red diesel ,this classification changed a few years ago to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes ,mewps are also o license exempt I think.

We now operate a 27 m truck mount on a 3.5 ton nissan chassis cab, were insured with the NFU ,it's a special so your broker would have to speak to the underwriters ,were paying around £900 a year but the machine is 2 years old and cost around £100k new.:thumbup1:

As above but we are with Aviva, they have done us a deal on insurance for things like mewps and bowsers which is very reasonable because of the relatively low annual mileage. You can for peace of mind run any vehicle through vosa and obtain a vehicle certificate of road worthiness. This not an anual test but just a ticket to say its in a roadworthy condition.

Bit of a thread resurrection and deviation. I'm sure some time ago when I was researching MEWPs there are restrictions on towing (trailer had to be related to the work of the MEWP or something). I can't find the source doc, but do the restrictions only apply to tax exempt classes or all MEWPs? I think only tax exempt classes but can't remember. I may also be totally wrong!
