I have Sky broadband and it feels slow. So I've visited 4 broadband speed check web sites, run the test and the results are in the range ..

Download 1.2 to 1.8 Meg

Upload 0.53 to 0.62 Meg

Not sure if these results are good or bad, or how to improve them, hope someone here could help?

Time of day is a factor also...gets slower at peak time.

Your speed will depend on how far you are from the exchange with sky/bt/talktalk.

Improves with bt infinity which is fibreoptic to the exchange but still old school copper to your house.

Im fortunate to have cable in my area, same price as bt and sky but i get upto 60mb and very reliable connection too.

Google broadband choices to see if you can get a better speed/price.

The tests were carried out using my business PC, which is wired.

My wife complains about speed when using wifi and an iPad, which I assume will be slower.

According to one web site we should be getting 5.5 Meg.

At these sort of speeds your being wired/wireless is irrelevent; this is slow.

Speak to your provieder, in fact complain.

You may not ultimately get anywhere as a lot of areas in UK are just slow.

You could have some wiring issues;

Check to see if you've got your filter connected correctly and also see if you can find the 'Master socket'. It's bigger than any 'extension' sockets you have and should be where the 'phone line comes into the house.

Plug your router into this using the filter; your house 'phone should go into the filter in the appropriate socket. You might have some issues if you've got 'phone extensions, even if nothing's plugged in.

Have a look at this; thinkbroadband :: BT Master Socket Identifical Tool for BT Broadband Accelerator / BT I-Plate

And this Tips to Speed Up Your Broadband

If none of this applies to you (or works) go to your provider; they usually try to blame BT and they're not always wrong! Sometimes, your connection to the rest of the world is just pants and that's that...

Good luck!

depends if in the sticks or in town. i live out in the country my phone line is baler twine laced with copper. i am lucky on a good day to get 2mb norm 1.5 or less. said o sky paying the same as others in town yet my service is c**p

looked int it and no chance of fibre ever yet have a satilite tracking station up road which has to dogs do da.s but will not link us into the line which runs to that. looking at putting in a loft be quicker to send a pigeon than it takes to send emails sometimes.

all this we will get fibre to the rural locations yes if its a big village. us in hamlets stand no chance of getting it.

I'd be happy with 1.5 Meg, only got a 1/2meg exchange here! So we end up with between 0.25 and 0.3. Would be nice if we could have a secondhand 8 Meg exchange that BT are taking out when they convert to infinity.

Oh, we pay just the same as well.

I know someone who was getting a regular 8.5Mbps with BT. Upgraded his package for a quoted speed increase and immediately dropped to a best of between 1.7 to 3.2Mbps. Three weeks later, after complaining every day about the discrepancy and getting nowhere fast. He changed back to original cheaper package and the speed increased to around 11Mbps.

When I'm down south, I get a wifi connection between 2.73 to 5.85Mbps. But in the sticks up north, I vainly dream of such heights. Where the best speed I've ever got from BT on a wired connection, has been a dizzying 1.2Mbps and the norm is around 0.73Mbps.

As I see it, regardless of how far you live from the nearest exchange. If you don't live in a city or within a dozen miles of a motorway, then lighting beacons and pigeon mail is going to offer the fastest comms route.
