If you're buying new then the 18v Makita LXT is your best best. It's been covered in depth here.

Very pleased with this, which I got last year.

Backed up with a Makita BTD146 impact driver.

If you can get a deal on both you'll be laughing.

Spot on advise, I did the same last year after asking on here - never looked back. For what I do I end up using the impact driver more than the drill. Would never put a fixing in with anything else, even my 80 year old mother commented on how good a tool it looked!

Makita too here, twin pack drill and inpact, cant fault them at all! batterys have about 3/4 year lifespan but free replacement by makita no matter what age. cant go wrong with these... the inpact is the best invention so far yet on planet earth! you'll never go back to a combi drill afterwards! good deals from itslondon too...

As everyone has said Makita Lxt / Bosch / Dewalt, Li-Ion do not buy Nicad.

You need at least 3 amp hr (4 amp hr is the new standard). Watch out for Screwfix Deals, buy the drill and 1 battery, get another battery at same time at a good discount, then buy a "bare" impact driver and your sorted. Battery charge times have come right down some are only 30-45mins now.
