Only removed the spark screen from day one . Don't know if here is any/ some / alot of scope for modding . New 550/560 are pretty good strait out of the box with regard to transfers etc .

The spark screen came out straight away too but I wouldn't class that as a mod though :)

I've done a great mod on mine mate. All you need to do is sell it and replace it with a200t. It works great cuts slightly better and most importantly it doesn't disintegrate into a pile of small pieces of plastic

Got to agree, I bought a new 201 on friday, my 6 month old 540 is falling apart

I've just bought a 540 because my 201 fell apart (after 2 years) the 540 doesn't excite me at all in an ideal world we should be able to buy 200t's brand new. I couldn't justify spending over £300 for a 2nd hand 200

Can't see why people are so negative re 540 on this thread, mines 6ish months old, on Oregon chain, out cuts muff modded 201t by ease, is far better balanced that both stihls in my opinion, is good on fuel, starts well, very torquey, just a lovely climbing saw!?

Im the same. No complaints here.

The 540 is a good saw from what I've seen of it, it feels a bit poorly built but time will tell. I think the main issue is these new saws aren't really a step up from the 200t more of a step sideways
