PLACES STILL AVAILABLE

FOR THE CLAUS MATTHECK SEMINARS IN MAY 2014

Arguably the most charismatic character in the arboricultural world, Professor Dr Claus Mattheck, will be returning in May. Symbiosis Consulting are hosting full day indoor events at the Fielder Centre in Hatfield, Hertfordshire on Tuesday 20th, and Loughborough University, Leicestershire, on Wednesday 21st. Claus will then deliver a similar presentation at the Edinburgh Botanic Gardens for the AA Scottish Branch on Friday 23rd.

Booking forms for the English events are available here: https://tinyurl.com/noj6o8k

or by phoning 01455 828822. Details of the AA Scottish Branch event are on the Association’s website at Arboricultural Association

The presentations will contain important new material, including a detailed exposition of the updated branch attachment model, which is based upon Shigo’s original but modified by Claus and his colleagues to take account of their extensive research of this critical subject area. The primary differences in the updated version are that the branch and stem wood grow simultaneously, and that there is no closed ring of stem wood around the living branch; instead, the ‘tails’ of the branch, deviated downwards, are placed in-between the bifurcated bundle of stem wood running downward around the branch. Claus will then explore how they have used this research to develop a better understanding of the causes of branch failure and in particular how non-decayed branches can fail due to the presence of lateral grain.

Also included in the programme will be an overview of the highlights from Claus’s new book - “The body language of trees - encyclopaedia of Visual Tree Assessment", which contains the best of a quarter of a century of his tree biomechanics research and is currently being translated for publication here in the UK later in 2014. In the meantime, you may want to look at Claus’s latest You Tube video ‘How branches become dangerous because they are too vigorous’ which can be accessed via his web site: Baumdiagnoseseminare mit Prof. Dr. Claus Mattheck

Very engaging speaker and 'performer' would certainly recommend this seminar to anybody wanting to engage with biomechanics.

I won't be going this time, been to it twice before, unlikely to go see Herr Mattheck again in this format.

Would certainly like to attend a workshop in the field though.

Unfortunately not this time. I don't suppose anyone has a date for publication of the book?

I'm looking at branch attachment for an independent research project for my L6, so could of done with going and I think the book's going to be too late to be of use.

Don't know if this has been widely publicised or not, but full time students are being offered half price tickets for Edinburgh.

So I think sixty five pound plus vat or thereabouts.

h to be a student... not!
