Any ideas? I can't quite place it. Big buds and leaf scars, smell slightly sweet, solid pith in the twigs.

Bark similar to Norway maple at glance. I believe Paulownia has hollow pith, and opposite leaves? This had alternate buds and leave scars.

Also you can see in a pic above a few inches on the tips of some branches had shrivelled and died.

It's one I know I have seen before, but not often. I think the stage of bud burst is confusing me! In winter twig mode or full leaf I'm sure it would be easier :banghead:

Chinese wingnut or hybrid wingnut. I seem to recollect from a recent assignment that the withered tip was a distinguishing feature. No books at home at the moment so I can't confirm it

 

Confusing myself now. The withered tip is common in Paulownia
