I suspect thats correct but what would one expect for less than £500 in cast iron.

Nothing less. Just that you hear so many bad reports of Chinese cast iron and I find it annoying that some British 'manufacturers' forget to tell people in their adverts that 'their' foundry is in China and bullshit with statements like: 'cast from iron ore is superior to recycled from scrap'. Try telling Jotul that.

We've had a Hunter Hawk for about 12 years now, it only has a cast door the stove body is welded from boiler plate steel and is quite thick. It only has basic airwash system no tertiary air control but it can be shut down fairly low. We've been happy with it for what it cost which was £350 at the time. We found it at a local stove supplier cheaper than on the internet.

I'm not sellling one!:001_rolleyes: I am simply responding to a question re sub 500 quid stoves, which incidentally the OP never said NO Chinese when first posting but made it clear it must be less than £500.

I can only speak from experience and having run one as a second stove for 5 years without problem for the mighty sum of 300 quid, its not bad. I run an expensive Esse as my primary heat source and whilst it kicks out the heat as a British made product it is not without faults wrt to quality control. I'm not preaching its better than Jotul, I know that its not, just answering the original question which the OP has now amended. :001_cool:
