The last time I used my saw it was juddering as I started each cut. The chain is new and sharp, and was oiling well and properly tensioned. I can't think of anything else to check. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks :confused1:

What wood were you cutting? As said above, juddering is usually associated with each cutting tooth trying to cut just a little too much with each pass. If it was a hard or dry wood it would likely do this.

is the chain on the correct way round ?

is the chain the correct pitch for the sprockets ?

what numbers are stamped into the drivelinks ?

what numbers are stamped / engraved into the guidebar ?

It's a stihl 038 and I was mostly cutting pine, and a bit of beech. It's the correct chain according to what's stamped on the bar ( same pitch and links as previous chain which never had this problem ) and it's fitted the right way round. I didn't check the mounts though

Had this once, was a new Carlton chain, binned it and put the old Stihl chain back on and all was well.
