Ford Ranger misery!

My 2004 Ford Ranger (80,000 miles) has just been diagnosed with gearbox failure - agh! What did I do wrong in driving it normally? Has anyone had a similar thing happen and what was the solution? Buy a Hilux someone will say but who can afford that? Lease it then...? I've been quoted £1000 if the clutch needs doing at the same time! Luckily I've got a few jobs lined which should just cover the costs.:001_huh:

Do you drive wit your hand on the gearlever, or have anything hanging off it? Apparently this can put strain on the box.

That's it. I remember now. I've been gripping the gear lever too tight. Should've been more gentle. These rugged commercial trucks need wrapping in cotton wool to protect them from gorillas like me!:001_tt2:

Im a hilux owner, ive had 6 now and always take them over 200,000 miles, and ive never put a clutch in one let alone a gearbox, theres either something seriously wrong with your ranger or your driving it to hard i.e towing, ford cant be that crappy

It's a known ranger problem, though tbh I thought it was from 06 on
