Alder Crown Thinning

When i saw this thread i thought crown thin an alder thats odd. But this is more of a specimen tree. Nice job i think it looks good. The tree will like it i work on a lot of alder and they love regrowth:001_smile:

Just a few thoughts.... I never said I was helping the tree.... I was asked to do the job and I agred and so really I was helping te bank balance more than anything.

Regarding un-necessary growth... I would say any large ammount of growth on a large main stem that is completley hollow at the base would be

un-necessary, as well as all the crap in the crown which is never going to come to anything worthwhile.

 

I dont get to do many crown thinnings or crown cleaning for that matter, normally we are slashing them down by any means possible on the railway or carrying out remedial works or sectional feling or dismantling so I'm not really up to speed on crown maintenance work, which is why I appreciate anyones comments as it's an area I'd like to do more with.

You never know.... one of the main stems is absolutley shot to bits.... completley hollow inside. Had to transfer into it at the top from the good stem and thin my way down it. I wasnt feeling exactly comfortable with it but it did help me push my comfort zone a wee bit.. like I said before, I dont get many jobs involving crown maintenance so I really enjoy it when they do come along..
