So what do people think us a fair price for a yew log.? £3.50 a hoppus or more. I know it depends on quality but let's assume it's better than it looks.

How does collection and conversion effect the prize of raw material in situ? After all it not worth anything until it is something or am I missing huge potential here?

It has value as a raw material. I was asked if I wanted to put an offer in on a felled yew, so all I will be doing is driving there with trailer and dropping it In. I think I will offer £3 hoppus, seems fair to me?

Wait until it is felled and trimmed out , Yew varies in colour a great deal , and is very prone to having a lot of shake ... The hoppus foot measure is a bit irrelevant here really as many sections of yew is so un-round , fluted etc it is hard to estimate ... but if it is nice wood in colour with minimal shake then it is worth more than £ 3.00 per cu ft , even small branch wood is useful and saleable and it keeps well so any one buying for their own use should be stocked up for years . The owner seems aware it is worth more than firewood ... but will they accept the best offer they get ? .. or hang on in the hope for more ?, it is not often easy but that is how market forces work unfortunately !!

So I went to see the yew today, she's a nice lady with little expectation of value. The tree however is not so nice, what appears to her as large butt's will more than likely fall apart when cut.

It has some value, I advised her it would be worth £150-400 depending what it looks like when felled. I will go back in a couple of weeks to make an offer when down.
