So just out of curiosity whats it worth? I ask as I get allsorts of interesting flamed burred figured curled etc bits coming through and dont really know what they are worth or were to market them so they end up as logs!! I dont expect Im alone either!!

it's worth as much as some one is willing to pay. as its still wet it will only be £15ft3 but if you had a whole tree of sawn boards then you could sell it for £45ft3.

that would make a 12x12x3 blank £5 but as turners we have to worry about if that bit will split or not. £15 is a perfectly reasonable price for a dry blank that size whether it be spalted or just nicely figured as this bit is.

Hmm I've heard that marketing boards, beams etc is the hardest part time and time again which is probably why so much beautiful timber ends up as logs! is there not a market for an online market place for decent timber??

I personally would not buy wood without seeing and feeling it , I prefer to cut it from log form myself , also the cost of postage tends to make it a bit expensive , most craftsmen source their wood locally and there is plenty of it about , decent butts can be valuable but try getting a merchant to send out a lorry ( with hiab ) for one butt , it is a sad but long standing situation. Anything more than firewood value , without having to cut split and deliver it is a bonus surely !

I milled this Beech today it looked better than the shed it landed on. I haven't sold any wood ye but been stockpiling for a couple of years now and am about to start making garden benches tables. Best grain Ive milled so far I hope u like it.

Ah yes too much they were a 4 man lift though a 2'6" side gate when milled at 1"5/8. I cut the centre at 4"1/4 and slid it off, wow that was a slab then ripped free hand into 3 pieces (for the table legs).

Tis a mega hard market to crack! It's all worth a fortune until you find someone to buy it!

Selling timber is the hardest part - I have an ebay shop now and it's starting to shift some wood but still slow Timber sales, Sugihara guidebars Stihl items in chainsawbars alaskanmill and treet store on eBay!

Bear in mind it takes an age to photo and upload to ebay so I give someone 20% of the sold price for doing this.

20% uploading commission

20% vat

10% ebay fees

3% paypal

5% on making up the postage and packing materials

2% for returns/problems

20% Cost of wood/planing/prepping/storage

5% admin and misc

Profit 15%

Not alot! But if you were not vat registered and did everything yourself you could do better.

probably because you are charging too much.

this one works out at £150ft3

Lot 4005 Cedar Ripple wood/timber/plank/board 213cm x 19.3cm x 2.1cm | eBay

you've listed some nice timber rob but i'd never buy wood at the prices you are asking.

Different market though Steve. For finished timber, sold as individual pieces, you have to charge that much to stand a chance of making anything. Check out Lanarkshire Hardwoods if you really want to blow your mind!

just for putting it through a planer wont add that much on it...

i know of lanarkshire hardwoods and wonder how they can be in business.

if a board is downright stunning then you can charge an awful lot for it but it must be AAAAA grade to command those sorts of prices.
