I bought it brand new form a builder who bought a scaffold tower from me.

It was a real coincidence,I had been trying to locate one for a long time and when he opened the van to load the scaffold it was in the back so I made him an offer he could not refuse and was worth every penny

the spirit level in the pic is 4ft long

Yep, they're hard slugging. A better way with hand tools is to get both a clam shovel and a 5' long steel, pry bar. You start the hole with a spade, to about 1'deep, then drive the clam shovel down, lifting out bits of dirt. The bar is for bashing stones out to where they can be grabbed with the clam shovel. Also hard slugging, but way faster than with a hand auger. I found that in glacial till soil with lots of stones, it's the only way to do it, even better than with a tractor mounted post holer attachment.

The trick is to find the Zen of post hole digging... Ohmmmm.

With an adapted frame, so that one of the operators can anchor a bar to the ground, and as long as you are ready for it to hit a stone, the stihl ones are excellent- used one for years with no problem.

Any chance of a photo of the digging head? I think I see how it works.
