scuse my ignorance, but if the particular piece of wood in question is going to be prone to splitting, will it be less prone on the mill rather than crosscutting?

 

I think I good miller will cut the timber in such a way that the tension is removed.

 

I was simply passing on advice from a mill owner who was buying timber from me.

 

He was complaining that inexperienced cutters were ruining Ash by cutting it too short and it splitting.
