RE Verifying Climbing Experience

Hi All,

 

Could I ask the best way in your opinion to verify climbers prior to hiring their services? Do you ask them for references from fellow tree surgery companies etc? Is this the only option? Also is there such a thing as a register of climbers available?

 

Currently I am not in a position to be able to employ climbers on a full time basis though this is my intention in the future if all goes to plan.

Ask to see their certificates. They have to have at least CS38 or modern equivalent, plus 39 to use a chainsaw for freefall and hand held dismantling, plus 41 for rigging dismantling.

 

Someone will come along soon and tell you that ther is no register of climbers but that one is proposed by the Arb Assoc tech committees or something. It's a long way off though.

 

There's climbers and there's good climbers. They should have all the tickets plus good references.

Ask if they have qualis.

Ask how many years full time climbing.

(Check it is not doing line clearance work).

Offer them one day of work on a pre-agreed rate but if they are not up to scratch, you won't pay them at all.

I think after seeing any certification and any information, references a short trial period is the only way to know for sure, proof is in the pudding of ability and how you can get on working together.

Thanks very much for your comments, guess it's also a two way street, hope to obtain a good pool of quality climbers to get the job done in the safest & professional manner as possible.

Old mill why not line clearance as they can climb just like any other persons .

Ok utility climbers had bad press years ago but we are not all butchers who climb trees using spikes just to get spans cut.

Think most companies I have encountered have used a climbing assessment at interview stage and then a trial period following. One place had a pole for use with spikes.

Have them in for a day or more

you will soon see how much experience they have

IMO talk is cheap when it comes to climbing

you want to find someone who is good .but you also want to find someone who really enjoys the work
