I've sharped every pair of gaffs I've ever owned, I could not imagine using gaffs that were not kept really sharp, I don't stamp my spikes in, I expect my boy weight to be enough to push them in.

 

How often Dave ? I can honestly say I've never felt the need or gaffed out because I felt they where not sharp.

I say it as I find. Possibly down to the instructor......and you have to ask, if you weren't shown - why?

Using gaffs isn't a mandatory part of CS38, let alone sharpening them.

3 or 4 times a year, depends where we are working, when I used to do rail work they got blunt more often due to walking in them on ballast.
