Hiab to log crane conversion

Recommended Posts

I have been looking for a 3 point linkage timber crane and there is very little in the uk. So will follow this thread with interest. I want mine for yard use so i can stack high and get at it.

Have you thought about converting a 3 point linkage back actor? Thats what I use, the only drawbacks is it only turns to 90 degrees and not a lot of slewing torque!

I looked into this, its interesting to note that for all the backhoes used all over the world, you dont see people using them for moving logs with a grapple fitted.

There are issues with there ability to lift (the are designed more to contract than lift), how high they can lift and there lack of slew (thats as far as I understand when I looked into a few a year ago)

I use a top seat 650 Hiab on our trailer and it serves us well. As said above they are slow and are a bit short on reach but for what we do its not a problem. Its got enough grunt to lift a 3` diameter oak stick 20` long which is ideal for what we do. Brick grabs give more reach and are normally a lot cheaper but they dont fold up.The upside of the 650 is it will handle a monster of a grab ,ours opens up to 8`, the trailer runs a donkey engine for the hydraulics.

Modified brick grab on the back of the 6x6 project truck. As you can see there is no chance of it folding up but it has got lift at 8ton meter. and 8mtr reach

Thats AWESOME!!!!! the 650 is what im looking at as they are so common and price friendly. Do you know what flow rates the 650 requires to operate or what your donkey engines rated to? It seems crazy but Im having the hardest time just finding basic specs for them.

I dont think you will kill a 650 hiab on the slew , that thing on the trailer has done 10 years of daily slog and its mounted on the trailer which rises to the front so its always slewing uphill . The pump number is a dowty ip3052ctdfb which is 16.75 cc per revolution, this is run on a two cylinder lister engine at 1500rpm and I would say its an ideal combo. It does not show it on the plate but if you point the boom straight up and the jib straight down so its up close to the trailer it bill pick up about 6 ton.

our county has worn through two atlas 3008 cranes. the third is ready in the yard.

this is a hardwood setup for working in large timber. when you get a big enough log the crane has enough grunt to lift the front of the tractor

there is now too many cracks above the cab:001_rolleyes:

How much would you say that county setup is worth that's what I could do with for the yard.
