Not something I intend to ever do, as I have the kit, but just wondered how people used to chunk down before pulley's? Modern day pulleys give the movement necessary to do this quite easily, but before they came along???

20 years ago I was using a small steel pulley designed for industrial lifting / lowering . That was attached to the tree using car seatbelts sourced from the local scrap yard

 

Seat belts also made cheap slings .
