The Mower Bench

On the bench today was the first of the new Tanaka TCH22ECP hedge cutters for PDI

The old THT210 was fantastic, but this is even better, It has a sturdier feel to it and very low vibration levels.

Looking forward to selling some.

One of the Deere mowers in the previous picture had slowly lost power over 10 minutes use, eventually dying completely. The engine is a Briggs 3100 series 19.5hp single pot.

It then would not turn over more than half a turn on the starter before coming to what seemed like a compression stop. Turning the engine by hand could achieve a full revolution, but with effort.

A swift removal of the rocker cover revealed the problem. The rocker arm post of the inlet valve had come undone by about 3 threads, so the inlet valve was not opening.

What I had thought was a 'compression lock' was in fact a 'vacuum lock'. No air could get into the cylinder so the piston could not be drawn down.

Simply tightening the post, refitting the valve stem cap and adjusting the valves had the engine going again in no time.

Nice easy fix! That'll make the customer smile, I'll bet he was imagining the worst.

The trouble is that the machine is just 3months out of warranty. 24 months warranty is just that, not 27 months.

Its obviously a manufacturing issue, but the customer should pay, but I expect I will not charge even though I can't claim it back.

Its not just the repair cost but also the transport in and back.

Ym6521 sm. Ps what do you think of these machines?

No real alternative Mike, as the assembly controls 2 function.

All parts are available, but no complete assembly.

What do I think of them?.......Not much. Poor build quality, cumbersome, and very prone to early rusting through of the deck (poor steel)

I guess you are meaning a Murray Ride On mower Josh.

As you said, they are cheap but OK. Poorly engineered, but somehow they keep going.

Its difficult to advise on a choice of mower, as it depends on your budget and the revenue from cutting an acre every two weeks is not going to justify much.

Many ride ons simply do not collect well, especially if driven a little too fast and will be very frustrating in a commercial application.

Rather than list every option with its plus and minus points, its probably best for you to find a prospective purchase and then ask for comments on its suitability here before you buy.

Or are you thinking new?
