I have to clear up 2 large sycamore next week, between 42 and 48 inch DBH. Would it be worth me milling these or just ring them up for firewood?

(Mobile phone for reference to size)

they have about 12foot of clean wood before the first limb

if you mill it up there is potentially 250ft3+ with both trees and even selling green at a mere £15ft3 that's £4000+.

Expensive fire wood then ! Makes me shudder when you put it like that , the stuff we have ringed up in the past . :blushing:

I love sycamore for kitchen worktops.

Just remember that wood worms LOVE this and will get in very quickly and very quickly ruin it! I had some remaining from building my kitchen and it was ruined within 12 months. I should have sprayed it with Cuprinol or similar!

Definately worth milling up, worth even more if it has ripple in the grain (looks like ripples in water when you catch it in the light).

Don't dry it conventionally stacked horizontally with sticks as the sticks can easily stain the timber. Best dried stood on end against a wall.
