HS 81 R Hedge Trimmer broke today....

Ive had the HS 81 R Hedge Trimmer for 3 years and got to say its been fantastic, so much so infact that ive not done allot in the way of maintenance but ive done allot in the way of major de veging, bramble smashing and pretty hardcore hedging. Been doing some site clearance this week and my colleague was using it to cut thick bramble. A piece got stuck but he kept on revving and next thing you know its broken. It starts fine but when it revvs there is no drive to the blades. Im pretty clueless about how these things work but I opened up the housing below with the star screws and everything seemed in order with the mechanism/cogs thing in there so im thinking the think that drives that must have broken. theres a nasty metallic ringing/rattling sound when its running. Any ideas? i was going to take it to repair shop tomorrow but wanted to have an idea what it was so im not getting bent over in there!

kev im in mossley, not too far from huddersfield. Where do you reckons a decent repair shop up this end?

It could of possibly snapped the drive off the engine I've seen an hs80 do this ... It's pretty much junk if that's the case unless you have a spare with a blown engine.

i reckon its most likely that the clutch drum has become separated from the gearbox input shaft, rather than the engine shaft snapped.

 

If the engine shaft had snapped there would probably be no noise at all from the clutch, but with the clutch drum still rotating with the shoes there would be quite a rattle.

 

Its easy enough to split the gearbox from the engine to check.

Huddersfield saw and tool did my trimmers when the clutch went just watch their lead times when busy
