If you get a guy called Robin taking the course then take a pillow. Make sure you take advantage of the free coffee! He has a voice that sends you off to the land of nod. Did my first course there. Took it again recently in Blackwood and that tutor for that was loads better.

I hope no one thinks im jumping in unjustly here, but id like to shed some light on some people misunderstanding of Chapter 8.

This is in no way pointed at the OP or subsequent posts!

Ive just noticed some posters arguing over how long tickets take and how much the costs are.

There are 2 main types of training and quals, 'Streetworks tickets' or 'the sector scheme' routes.

If you work for private, commercial or utilities and just want to get a 'TM qualification' under your belt, the 'street works' route is best as its much cheaper, faster and a tad easier that the 'Sector scheme' route

If you plan to work for council highways or the highways agency they WILL normally require sector scheme and not streetworks, Sector scheme is much more difficult to obtain and takes longer than the streetworks tickets, but is much more indepth IMO.

I just thought id throw that out there as i do read quite often about how long / how much is costs to become 'TM qualified' , these days there is a lot more to it! if you go the sector scheme route, there are 7 units from mobile works op - supervisor, each unit needing at least a 1 day course followed by at least 2 live onsite assessments, if you dont do the assessments, you arnt qualified, some people think that by doing the courses in the classroom on sector scheme that you are qualified, but unfortunatly this is no the case.

If anyone has any questions just ask (we are a TM company!)

Very good question Kevin.

On the course I did we only looked at one setup, a 2 way shuttle system with temp lights. I don't own lights and would probably get a TM company in to set that up if I needed it anyway.

To answer your question the course is dull because we spent all day covering something I already knew but won't use, and the bits that I did want to learn and asked about the answer was " get the red book and look it up". Tbh I could have bought the book, read it, and saved a day out of work and the course fees, and still learnt more.

Very interesting info in post #16 re sector scheme v street works, I have often wondered how you actually learn about TM in depth. Cheers CBB!

I know a group of guys that done said course recently and at the end of the day the instructor said 'if you can't set your work site out as recommended in the little red book or haven't got enough signs just do as good a job as you can'.

All the time guys are being told this, your going to see work sites with just 2 tree cutting signs at each end !

I wonder how this stand up if something went wrong ?

Hi all, The above few descriptions do sound more like the streetworks qualifications.

Unfortunatly if you go the streetworks route they try to cram as much into as little time as possible (normally 1 day), The sector scheme route breaks TM down into 2 sections, highspeed (50mph duals , 60mph dual & motorways), and low speed (singles 30,40,50,60 and duals 30, 40).

Highspeed is sector 12 a,b,c and is impossible to get unless you works for a high speed company that does crash cushion and motorway works everyday

To be able to do all tm on the low speed section (sector 12D) youll need the following:

T1 mobile works (mowing, gully sucking, sweeping)- 1 day classroom

T2 (static works on single 30-60, shuttle working, lane closure, stop / go, inc lights) - 2 days classroom and centre based assessment – card issued once 3 live assessments complete

T3 - (lane closure on duals 30-40), 1 day classroom – card issued once live 3 live assessments complete.

T4 - (convoy working), 1 day classroom – card issued once 3 live assessments complete.

T5 - (3 & 4 way lights), 1 day classroom – card issued once 3 live assessments complete.

T6 – (Site Supervisor) - 2 day course

T7 - (office manager / tm drawer / work planner) 2 days classroom

The courses run at about £200 - £400 each, and the live assessments cost about £250 EACH!!!

so as you can see to get to be a basic TM operative you need to get T2, but to get T2 you must firstly do T1, even when you have T2, you will need a T6 as you MUST have a supervisor employed by the company to be in charge of he installation crews, and even before that all tM should ideally be planned by a T7!

now my fingers hurt...........and just to make it all worth while, these tickets DO expire! and need re training every 3 - 5 years

Bottom line, if you dont have ALL of the correctly employed / trained people in your firm T1,T2, (T3-5 if needed) T6,T7 and there is an accident you will be liable, like wise if your tree surgery insurance does not cover the installation of TM you are not covered.

If anybody want more info on the sector schemes or TM in general or would like to ask about an impending job please just ask. Although i must add i am not FULLY conversant with the 'streetworks' training as we only go the sector route as that is what, as a TM company we must have (i just know that the street works is not as indepth!)

Peace out

CBB
