I was on their shadow ranger scheme for a while. I was on the community ranger side, very enjoyable taking groups out and doing practical countryside management tasks. Applied for a few internal jobs with the commission and got nothing. What info do you want to know?

Depends what job you have with them. Forest crafts people do quite a lot of practical stuff, education, community and recreation rangers not as much. Most of the proper forestry stuff is subbed out to third parties.

I applied for a job which I was more than qualified for and so did a few other mates of mine and we didn't even get a interview for the position, I believe if a job comes up the role will already be filled internally or be filled by people who have contacts in the FC

FC job vacancy are advertised internally and if not filled they go out to the website.

 

As for working for the FC the production chainsaw stuff is very rare. Occasionally machine stuff comes up, you've got real competition for that.

The applications are "scored" you obviously didn't meet the criteria or communicate it an effective way. Like wise for your friends. The latest Fc post I know of received 180 applicants for one post. There were 6 interviewed. Based on those figures you need to be highly experienced. But more importantly, bloody good at communicating that experience in an application. If you ask they will always give you feed back on your interview. What was yours?

Don't get me wrong, there are some very good foresters within the FC but it gripes a bit when they come on site having never felled a tree and tell how best to do your job.

Where does it say you need to know how to fell a tree to manage forests. I agree with you, the public sector is littered with people who do lots of paper work but with no hands on skills. As a manager you have experience of forest and hr management and communicate that well enough it's all you need. You

Have craftsmen for actually using the tools. Though their ability or enthusiasm to use it can also at times lack. But this is not about what existed in the past. Once you're in, it's virtually impossible to be removed. With all large employers your ability to get the job relies not only on your merits but your ability to put them across to an interview panel.
