Chipper hours, how many is too many..

If you are handy with mechanics then don't be scared to go second hand - there isn't much to a chipper in reality. If you allow an additional £1000 for parts etc over and above any purchase price you should have a decent contingency. Get one bought, get it home and pull it apart before using it full time. Fix/replace anything that needs sorting whilst you have it in bits, and then go and earn some money! You will know the machine backwards and will be able to keep an eye on any potential weak areas that you may have discovered.

Alternatively, buy a new one (on finance if necessary) and save yourself more off your tax bill whilst not having to worry about reliability (but remember that new machines can also have their problems, and whilst these problems are covered by warranty you could waste an equal amount of time getting it sorted as you would repairing an older machine). If you buy new make sure you are confident that your dealer is going to be able to give you fantastic support in the event of something going wrong. Down-time can be more costly than parts and labour!

Thats a hard one.

It depends on whom used it and whether they left it running when idle= Makes a huge difference.

As does regular blade changes/ oil changes= the more worn they become , the more strain on the engine etc. bad oil is bad.

As does putting bricks through. Not sure theres a good reason to take much notice of hours clock.:001_smile:

we had an old entec chippit 6'' done 8,000 hrs and the engine was spot on always had its oil changed every 100hrs but never had a problem with the engine, everything else had been replaced at least once this includes 3 hour clocks which we kept to show record of hours, so it shows if you look after a machine it will just keep going. maintenance is the key factor.

Wow that must be a record for a small machine like that:thumbup1:.

Good tip is to replace bits BEFORE they wear out, that way you minimize down time and the old part probably still has some value on eBay. Preventative maintenance is the key, don't wait for things to go bang.
