If you can get hold of the timber than what's the harm in giving it a go.

What I would say though is you will more than likely struggle to get hold of any, and if you can, there's half a chance it will be stuff nobody else wants otherwise it wouldn't be out on the open market - pretty much every stick of firewood has a buyer sorted out before the tree hits the floor round here.

Well thanks for all your advice. From what I have read I think the log job is a no go, to many local firms selling at £60/70/m3. Im not one for working for free!

Best of luck to the rest of you, hopefully this cold weather will help boost your sales.

Regards

Tom

If you have a spare shed, a spare tractor, some spare time and can use the wood in your own home fires you'd have little to lose.

Dependent on what area you are in you may be eligible for a diversification grant of up to 50% of a processor cost. So it could be a quids in at the start venture.

I'd consider buying in three loads of firewood that'd mean an outlay of around £12,000 including the processor cost. From this you could process around 130m3 of wood that'd recoup your outlay and cover fuel. It'd then be a case of seeing how long it'd take to move it at £90/m3 and then you could decide if it is a worthwhile venture.
