bowl turning thread

Right so heres my set up, the round face plate screws to the lathe and I take it you screw the face plate to the bowl blank. Watching a few youtube vids it looks like everyone favours a chuck that you can turn the base to the size of the chuck jaws then turn the bowl round which will then hold the bowl base while you turn the inside of the bowl. I take it I cant do that with my primitive set up?

for those sized blanks a screw chuck would be better than a face plate. you can buy ones that screw directly on to the lathe or buy plates that fit in to the jaws of a chuck.

 

face plates that size are realy meant for doing much larger bits of work.

 

my jet 3520b only has a 3" faceplate and thats enough for the 20" swing

Hi all , new to this forum , glad to see some Arbs are also woodturners , I was an Arb for 20+ years ( I drive a lorry now ) but have been turning for about 15 years and have hopefully enclosed a few pics of my work ! The vessel with a lid is spalted beech with a lid with a deer antler handle , about 15" dia 9" high , the other is horse chestnut burr , with lots of holes ! about 12" high , Terry.....
