Hi Folks

 

Can anyone confirm if the chainbreak test requirements for the NPTC now remove the requirement for the full throttle test. I have heard it has been replaced by asking the candidate to apply the chain break at tick over and throttle the machine to check for correct break function??

I believe it's in accordance with manufacturers spec which it is for stihl to apply chain brake then rev for a few seconds although I prefer the other way at full revs

have been in contact with a stihl rep since posting, they recommend applying the break at approx half chain speed to check system works without placing undue strain on the saw components.

Surely it's test, therefore should test the function as it may be required. Therefore run saw flat out, apply brake if chain stops we're good go. If it doesn't it's not fuctioning correctly and needs sorting, better to find out in a controlled manner rather than when something goes wrong.

This makes far more sense. I hate seeing people run their saw at full rev then knock on the chain break

Did my course in September. The whole test was, rev and let go to check for chain creep, 3/4 rev to check for oil spray let go of throttle, apply brake rev to check brake holds and finally brake off, 3/4 rev and turn off with switch.

When I sell a saw I always show how to start it, stop it and use the chainbrake.

 

I only ever apply from around half revs, any more is unnecessary.

 

If it works at half revs, it WILL work at full revs, but it does apply a lot of shock load to the crank and clutch which I do not think would be good for the saw long term.

 

Domestic users just do not seem to get their head around the chainbrake though and need showing several times.

as the person who actually pays for the saws, it really bugs me when one of my guys is snedding up and whacks the brake on with finger still on the throttle.

 

tool maintenance takes up at least one weekend day a month :thumbdown:
