Coal miners on strike-chap with saw cut off lowest limbs to warm his cockles by the fire?

Browsed by giraffe's in the early 80's don't worry Maggie had them all slaughtered cause the stuck up for the miners!

 

Looks like human intervention to me, now trying to reform it's lower crown.

Nod got it right. The miners would only climb up so far to cut all the branches up for firewood. The top ones obviously kept on growing and the lower ones are all new growth. Very common in mining communities. Not many chainsaws around otherwise they would have had the whole tree I presume.
