Drying firewood with biomass boiler

We are getting 2x 100kw roundwood biomass boilers installed this month, on the RHI scheme and we are going to use the heat produced to help dry our logs using industrial blow heaters powered by hot water from the boilers, hopefully it will make enough airflow to dry the logs and stop the mould forming. Has anybody fitted a similar system or any helpful ideas?

Nothing similar but which fan coil units are you considering? I wanted a 100kW one running off 80C and a return of 40C but it came to over 1200 quid.

A friend has one 300kw biomass to dry hay which, after much experimenting, has now worked a full twelve months without much alteration.

His thoughts on moving the warm air created was to suck rather than blow. There were several reasons for this but the main ones were that the fans for sucking were smaller and needed less power to work and the noise issue.

The radiator to transfer the heat into warm air was made to suit the output of the boiler and he explained that it was surprisingly cheap.

Issues with the 'heat meter' are still ongoing and I will no doubt be informed if the answers to his questions over payment are positive......

How are you getting on with your Log Dryng Kiln?

We have a 100kw boiler with a 6000l accumulator and 100kw fan in the end of a 40' container.

First thing i would say is get the container insulated. A lot of companies fitting RHI boilers dont understand kilns so are fitting them without insulation to get the maximum RHI. Virtually pointless if you want to dry wood.

We have our fan turned all the way down and its producing 25/35kw's an hour on the metre at the moment.

It drys beech/ash hardwood under 30% in the middle in 2 weeks and 3 weeks under 20%. Ours isnt fully insulated yet so we are hoping for better results when its all on.

Larch softwood is drying to under 10% in around 3-4 days.

We have learnt the hard way after dealing with a completely useless renewable energy company but its finally coming together!

I will take some more pics later

Nice setup and thanks for replying. I agree if you are a practical person not afraid to do the research, going it alone can often be the way forward. Many many people jumping onto the Renewable E bandwagon who know less than you or I. Looking forward to seeing more pics! Where abouts r u?

What size is the boiler? Are you using a container or a building to put the wood in to dry?
