Anyone into stone walling?

a few walls iv done over the summer. Mostly granite. The last one is a turf faced (mainly) devon hedgebank which I built 2 years ago. 50 years ago they were paid to bulldoze them flat now we are being paid to put them back again in the same place!!!!

The dreaded stone wall... slow tedious work. We don't have shortage of them in ireland:banghead:

Personally I like walling. The main downside for me, is finding enough small fill stone. Or worse, having to grub around in a beck for it, when it's near to or below 6°C / 42.8°F. Your hands never warm and you can't trust the grip of your hands, even when you can see them. A bit like winter climbing, only you're hefting stone, not hefting yourself.

Yes, and heavy lumps of granite hurt when they bite! I don't tend to do much free standing walls so don't have a problem with fill in, although if I'm rebuilding a wall I still end up coming short of stone a lot of the time!

what some cracking jobs do they have a comp for dry stone walling. do not have any stone in hampshire only hampshire diamonds for doing walls and thats a art as well

Thanks, I don't really advertise walling so never get enough of it that I get bored/tedious of it. A chap near me does it pretty much day in day out and his work is incredible but I think he said he wouldn't mind never seeing a stone again!
