What's the standing value of ash and alder?

Give them time. They'll either try to get it down and out themselves and realise how much work's involved, or it will just stand there for ever and a day.

 

That's when you can go back in with a lower offer

 

Bugger the secret emails, processor size, ash = £15-25, alder = £14-15

 

That's interesting Jon, do you find the Ash really generates that much more roadside round you? Round us it might get a little more but not much - especially as most of the ones worth dealing with know Alder's worth having too.

The wood we looked at has been marked inefficiently by the owner and is allot of work to fell also. Plus with the 2m spacing restriction between the rows, not being able to remove a row for a bigger machine and he doesnt want it to be rutted on the tracks, i think my pricing is going to be much lower than 15 a tonne to even clear costs!!!

@ £15 a tonne standing, that leaves £30 or more per tonne to fell and extract it. Is it really that bad a site you can't do it for anywhere near that?

It's small stuff , 4 to 8 inch beech, cherry and ash. It's maths really, loads of effort to get a tonnage, hourly felling rates with the boys etc. if I sell for 50 a tonne, thats 5 profit in the end! It's just not worth the effort and expense of working the wood. We can earn more through Arb work. I know there is a value for standing timber but overpaying initially to then have to get hassled when selling!!! I'm not into that!!!

Its not all bad. They are paying me to fell and process some of their wood on site for their own fires. I have asked £45 per m3 of loose logs stacked in the shed.
