Should I be able to smell Smoke from next doors fire in my lounge

Next door have started using their log burner. Everytime they light it I can smell the smoke in my lounge. I've an open fire but haven't started to light it yet this year. Is it normal that I can smell the smoke. don't want to go roun and say something if this is normal

HI JONNY they may have a leak then leaking into your house not good mate jon

Go round and ask them to rod the chimney, it may be a partial blockage or a nest has been built during the summer.

Sounds like one of my neighbours. Shared stack and when the builders burnt all the debris in the fireplace the neighbour (on other side) got smoked out.

 

In the end it was an old house and knackered mortar. Instead of fixing the leak they blocked up the fireplace.

 

Maybe your neighbour needs a new flue? Or as Mick said get it rodded.

Is there flue lined for there wood burner if not there could be a hole or holes in the brickwork between the 2 chimneys or if the wind is laying wrong maybe you have a down draft . If it is coming threw holes in the brickwork and they haven't got a flue pipe you should have a word as it should be if its a poor state

You need to establish if it's an inversion layer pushing the smoke down from the top of the chimney because your house has a circulation that's drawing air down the chimney (as you don't have a fire yet). Or it may be cracks in the flue (bad thing). First mover would be a chimney balloon in the bottom of your flue. If that stops the smoke smell then try the same at the lop.

As far as they're aware its got a flu lining in. He's going to get his "bloke" round to have a look and see what the problem is.

 

As a few of you have said it might just need rodding. Hopefully its not a brickwork issue..

Is it an older house or a newer one - as others have said, maybe just leaks between flues!
