This is my last post as this is silly.

You buy a 0.7m3 bag for £50 and moan about poor value.

You see a 1.0m3 bag for £70 and want to buy some.

That's the same price per volume of logs as both are loose packed.

As you say, you buying logs off people clearly isn't a good idea.

Best to cut your own! Good luck.

 

I feel you're missing my point. That being that selling by the BAG is a vague measure and i didnt know what VOLUME i was going to get. Whereas the guy in the ebay ad is more clear about how much wood he's selling. I didn't buy a 0.7 cu metre bag. I bought a random bag that the seller said "contains approx 0.7 cubic metres.

 

My point is that the majority of traders dont use a standard unit of measurement when selling firewood. This doesnt help the customer to compare the prices of different traders nor visualise the amount of wood they'll recieve.

You sell by the cubic metre and that's fab. Very clear. What im trying to explain is that a lot of folk sell by the bag and they dont say how big that bag is or how much wood is likely to be in it. For example, there's a chap on ebay who sells wood in bags and says that they're much bigger than builders bags. If he was nearer then i'd buy from him.

Buy from people who specify the volume. Find someone local you can trust and stick with them. You get what you pay for. You are unlikely to find any bargains on ebay now with there high selling fees. Everything I have looked at on ebay this week costs a third more than from a normal person.

Nah, he didn't tell me how big the bag was he just said it would hold 0.7 cubic metres. I wish i'd measured the bag! And yes im aware that this is 0.7 cubic metres loose, not stacked.

 

By the way, i searched on ebay...

 

18 ads are selling firewood by the cubic metre

42 ads are selling firewood by the vague "bulk bag" method.

I think we are all going round in circles here. Splitting hairs between 'he didn't tell me how big the bag is' and ' he just said it will hold 0.7 cubic metres' still doesn't avoid the fact that the difference comes about because of the difference between loose volume and stacked volume, unless of course you are saying that he told you that he was supplying a stacked volume of 0.7 cubic metres?

Finally, judging an industry by people selling on Ebay is rather flawed. Just saying....

This thread is a load of rubbish, you bought a bag of wood for £50 and didn't get as much as you wanted/expected, big deal, don't buy off him again and get over it.

Mr bowlander or can I just call you der. I will supply you with a trailer load which holds a bucket full of the tele handler. The bucket is about 2foot narrower than the door of the shed. And the trailer is big enough to fit a bucket full in. I will only stack for free if you are old or you have a 22 year oldish maid/babysitter to help me 😝

you say he said it was a bag of logs and i assume you asked how much does it hold and he said about 0.7 cube of wood. did not say it is 0.7 of wood

as others have posted i would ask if anyone on arbtalk would like to sell you some logs. going on ebay then do not be diaspointed if you are worse off than you are now. they are all good guys and gals on this site and you will get a good load of good wood from any of the wood suppliers on this site.

i have been bitten by saying something was this and was held to it cost me in the long run so never sell my logs by volume or weight just eg builders bag pick up or trailer. they then know thats what they get and as yet all happy with there loads.

Now I am confused. You bought from someone who told you how big the bag was but were disappointed by the volume when stacked. Fair enough

 

You propose to buy from a guy on ebay (if he was nearer) a bag of loose logs that looks bigger but the advert offers no dimensions. Presumably you would be equally disappointed if his £70 bag failed to stack 40% bigger than your £50 bag?

 

No i wouldnt be disapointed because its obvious from the picture that its a cubic metre bag, unless that guy is a dwarf, which i doubt. So i'd have an idea about how much firewood i'd be getting before i bought it.

 

There was similar ad on ebay where the seller had a photo of cubic metre bag next to a bulk bag to show the difference in size. It has since vanished. Not sure if it was the same guy but there was a thread a while ago about an ebay seller being threatened by other sellers for showing such a photo!
