Topping Conifers

Don't like doing them but since xmas they have brought us in about £10k and at the moment there's not much else about on the private side. Did a load last week which sounds very much like these. Spiky stems in the middle all cut at different height,get scratched to hell. Head down and stick at it.

After 6 tons of the f**ckers I was happy every time I found a big ball of pigeon sh**e to break the monotony.

There's quite a few conifer hedges that I trim regularly, having seen one with a kids den in it I noticed how easy it was to cut with a nice platform to stand on. I wondered if it would be worth carefullu cutting all the old stubs in the centre to the same height and attaching scafold boards along the length of the hedge. from then on trimming would take a quarter of the time. Problem is after you'd done it they'd get some one else in and they'd get the benefit of your hard work. I'd definately do it on my own hedge if i had one, set down so you were cutting at waist height.

 

i did one like that tom, so easy, but now the boards have rotted and not been replaced. hence i havent done it for about 4 years:001_smile:

i like topping conifer hedges as long as the sides are no more than an arms reach away(very very rare), but any more than that they are horrible, but actually topping them is not as bad as having a crap, long, twisty, step riddled drag to the chipper:thumbdown:

if theres a few plant pots and nice shrubs on the ground i throw the branches down in between the trees ( if theres room). Minimizes the risk of breaking something.

 

Also my secret weapon for topping conifers. My art postioner .
