just to confuse you further

if you drive a 7.5tonne wagon the speed limits are the same as a 3500kg van. but add a 750kg trailer they then become the same as a HGV ie 40mph on A roads, but it gets better this also applies if you drive any combination with a maximum autherised mass (MAM) of 8.25tonne this is plated weight not what you weigh.

just to further confuse the working time directive (HGV drivers hours) may or may not apply as well, even VOSA could'nt answer that.

BE WARNED if you are operating trucks/vans and trailers ignorance is no defence my employer found out we where all driving round towing illegally after a routine VOSA check when he brought in a traffic consultant to sort out his O licence.
