Stick to the log burner unless you have a big property

The woodchip boilers are very good but very complex and expensive to fix with lots of things that can go wrong and they do

I really really should finish insulating the roofspace:blushing:, 1/2 the hairy molly is still in the plastic.

Perhaps the Mice:lol: will have made a start for me.

(i) Insulate, insulate, insulate.

(ii) Make sure your boiler, plumbing and controls are working correctly.

(iii)Turn the thermostat back to 18 deg downstairs.

(iv) Limit the running hours of the boiler forby, i.e. do NOT leave it stat controlled

(v)Consider putting a logburner ( NOT plumbed in) in the living room.

AND

Finally do not EVEN consider replacing an oil boiler with a wood boiler.

UNLESS

One has an unlimited supply of free wood.

How have you calculated this? Capital plus O&M plus cost of wood?

 

 

 

Do you mean for travelling on the road with timber or on your own land?

 

50 tonne/annum work would keep an old County from rusting up.

 

Hi Andrew, sharp as ever!

fuel costs only, I reckon the RHI takes care of the capital and running, in order to make any sense of running the thing efficiently I have to start with keeping average fuel cost as low as poss, some is free dropped off, some is collected with obvious costs which comes very close to just getting it delivered in. Some is cut on the farm.

 

2). No just for stacking on the farm, pallet forks are ok for occasional use

HI MATE i no some one here had 2 very large log boiler 65kw each plus and they have a very large woods too and they use 250/300ton per year and in the 6/8 years they will run out of hard wood :lol:thanks jon

I,m still considering a log boiler beside our oil boiler so I can alternate between the two as time, timber, convenience dictates.

Well I retained the Wooster Bosh oil boiler.

I run it during the summer months, for DHW only.

20 to 30 min each morning and off again until the next morning.

For all the oil this uses Solar could not make sense.

Im sure you wouldnt have to buy woodchip, most tree guys are happy to give it away. It would be a lot less handling compared to log chipping.

All you are doing is drying it and burning it.

 

Excuse me, not being rude but what planet are you are you on, these boilers consume a LOT of wood and it certainly is not free where I come from, it is a hard earned product, with a value!!

 

I am finding the attitude of the boiler salespeople I meet is all about £££'s on yor feed in tarrif and no mention of the fuel needed.

I have supplied a few owners, so seen 1st hand the problems.

UK timber supplies are under huge strain and over next few years if more boilers are installed it will become more difficult to source your fuel locally, and it will not be free..
