Stopping stumps regrowing

Hi,

 

We own a piece of woodland/bog and as it is classed as sssi site we get paid to do certain works. They have asked for a price to fell 10 small birch trees approx 8inch diameter in the bog part and move into the woodland and remove a few seedling. I didn't see the chap when he shown my dad the job but he mentioned criss crossing the stumps and painting the cut stumps with something to stop them regrowing but my dad can't remember what he said!

 

Any suggestions what it the best product to put on them? They are mainly silver birch.

Silver birch stump won't regrow, so that's easy. Other stumps may, depending on species. If so, being a.sssi wouldn't EN specify what, if any, stump treatment? A small pile of woodchip a foot deep might be enough, or carefully grinding?

Best way to prevent stumps from shooting is eco-plug's, granulated Glyphosate

Birch does regrow in my experience. I second the eco plug idea

but if its in a triple SSSI then you need to have permission from the EA to use it. and if they will allow you to use it. not happy with chemicals on protected sites. if they need getting rid of use a stump grinder. but have it checked its oil tight. and it has things to stop the pipes splitting and chucking oil all over the SSSi site.

You don't criss cross a stump to poison it as a tress new growth is the outer ring.So that is where the stump needs to be poisoned if you're allowed to go ahead. Also birch stumps can re-grow .

Pull them out with winch no chemical needed.

Having cut down about 100 birches recently in my wood the smaller ones all regrew. Bigger old trees tend not to. At 8 inches they will regrow.
