Hi Steve

I'll be taking a whole load of burrs (all shapes, sizes, species) down to the Treefest at Westonbirt Arboretum over the bank holiday weekend if that's of any interest. Not too far from Bristol. Otherwise you can always visit my yard near Devizes if you've not got yourself sorted already.

No problem, I thought you might have picked up that large birch burr from Scotland.

Ha ha - the memory of an elephant there Alec.

I did look at that but it had numerous deep indentations that would have meant turning a colander, not a bowl.

The owner's an interesting guy though and will probably be a teastop again next year - yep, I was so good at lambing I've been asked back!

Are you in need of any small plum to finish the boudoir? I have a few chunks, i.e. there's thickness but no length.

Hi James,

Sorry for the delay. I'm thinking a foot in diameter would be good for the lathe i've got access too. Although anything up to about 400mm should be ok.

If you've got anything like that i'd be interested.

I don't really know what burr's might cost so if you can make a suggestion that'd be great.

Cheers

Steve

Steve, just looked through the pile, there's one at 300mm but it'd more like a group of small burrs and is quite thin. Not sure you have the depth on that one. There's one around 500 that I could make a 400 blank from, but having just removed some of the bark I notice a few worm holes in the SAP wood of this one, so the SAP would have to be removed when turning. Do you have a bandsaw for taking down a bigger burr? If not and you want me to do it id charge you £40 for a 400mm blank or £30 for enough burr for you to make one There not perfectly dried burrs, so you will no doubt have some cracks and fissures in the finished piece. Let me know asap as I'm leaving on Friday, and would need to get it sorted by then.

James
