Winches!!!

Hi everyone would like to get some opinions on a new purchase we are thinking about at work.

We are looking at getting a brand new six tonne tractor pro driven winch. It will be mostly pulling forty foot long spruce thinnings but may have the need to pull big stuff like mature windblown hardwoods .

I have narrowed it down to two manufacturers Igland or Uniforest, any advice which is best or just personnel opinions greatly appreciated?

Krpan.Forestry Winches KRPAN would be my choice.

Failing that a uniforest. I like the saw holder, hook holder and the clevis hitch on the butt plate. For the money of an 6 tonne Igland you could more that likely get a 8 tonne uniforest with full electro hydraulics and remotes.

Get the biggest winch you can afford and your tractor will handle.

I bought a 5 tonne electro hydraulic Krpan.

Cant fault it, but:

(i) The PTO shaft runs at quite an acute sideways angle, and on the DB1490 it also requires to be cut quite short which does not help.

(Which is why the Igland has the drum mounted so high, so as to allow a centrally mounted PTO stub on the winch)

(ii) It is relatively/surprisingly noisy, the chain reduction drive I presume.

I would however strongly advise the electro hydraulic option,on whatever breed of winch, cos that allows one to upgrade to remote control operation.

But for my needs/frequency of use the Krpan is a solid well engineered bit of kit.

regards

Marcus

PS

Fairly sure I admired a tractor mounted "Tiger" winch on hols in Austria in 2010.

Colour is identical.

If I am correct it were it looked superbly engineered.

I was sent a few Tiger images when I enquired and they look some bit's of kit!! I really like the folding Butt Plate idea/

Eddie.

Krpan also have a folding butt plate. It's very very handy especially for negotiating these new foot high stumps that are the 'in' thing in forestry at the moment  Also good for keeping the ends off the deck.
