At the moment theres 100% relief on RV of up to £6000. This won't last.

Thats about 80sq.m of building used as a workshop. Not sure how argicultural rules apply though- seems farmers get away with a lot.

Over £6000 is 2% reduction for every £120 under £12000RV

Note- if there was no relief you would pay around 46pence per £1 RV.per annum.

Best keep your heads down. It's a protection racket.

I have just had a rates bill for £15,750 for a building and yard the council say I am not allowed to keep! They have rated it as a warehouse and premises when its a forestry building and storage yard for timber.

I plan on using the building to store my machinery in and to run my firewood processor in so I can use it in all weathers.

If I have to pay £302 per week in rates alone I might as well pack up now!

We pay about £8k rates a year for a very nice 4000sqft unit, rent is about £20k on top. Expensive, though immeasurably better than the rat infested cowshed we used to be in.

Really? I have an ex rat infested cowshed (well, milking parlour). Solved the rat problem by adopting two cats.

I can think of 1001 better things to spend 28k on!

As someone said, it's nothing but a protection racket.
